Summary of Document

This file contains correspondence surrounding various topics covered by “The London Programme”. The correspondence dealt with complaints from both viewers and subjects of the programmes. The file covers the time period from January 1987 to January 1990, and is the fifth volume of letters in the Archive.

“The London Programme” was an investigative journalism programme that covered a wide variety of topics. The letters in this file predictably indicated that some of the subjects of the investigation were not happy with the portrayal their organisations received. A 16 January 1987 programme on unfilled job vacancies in London, prompted a youth organisation featured in the broadcast to complain about a misrepresentation of its services. Similarly, a 10 March 1987 programme on Warnborough College in Oxford generated claims and counter-claims between LWT and Warnborough. Other letters and phone calls claimed political bias and anti-union bias in the programming. The IBA generally replied to these complaints with standard form letters (see 17 February 1987 letter). Complaints from organisations such as Warnborough College received more direct attention and refutation.

The file also contains letters requesting the Authority to approve covert recording for particular programmes.
