A Guide for Researchers

Welcome to this pilot online resource which is available for students and staff at Bournemouth University and also for visiting researchers.
We hope that anyone with an interest in the historical development of television and radio in the UK will want to use this very large and hitherto underused collection and we welcome not only our own students but in particular the growing body of UK and international researchers studying the history of broadcasting.

About the IBA Archive

Welcome to this pilot online archive of selected material from the Independent Television Authority/ Independent Broadcasting Authority Archive (1955-1990).

The document archive of over 20,000 files and nearly 2,000,000 separate documents was transferred from OFCOM to Bournemouth University for the use of the university’s Centre for Media history and visiting researchers.

The archive consists of the internal documents and external correspondence of the ITA, regulator of commercial television in the UK (1955-1973) and also the successor regulator of both commercial radio and commercial television, the IBA.

There is a very useful Excel spreadsheet which names most of the files in the archive (available from the library website) but the information is at best very limited. This pilot online resource has been developed to help researchers get an idea of the sort of documents which can be viewed by visiting the archive as a researcher.
